Etihad Mobile App – Product Design & Experience

The Etihad Mobile App reimagines how millions of travelers interact with their flights, loyalty rewards, and travel timelines. It is built to simplify every step of the travel journey while reflecting the premium experience Etihad is known for. Our goal was to create a mobile product that feels effortless, intelligent, and supportive — especially in moments where travel can become stressful.

This was more than updating an airline app.
It was designing a complete digital travel companion.

Project Overview

The Etihad app allows users to:

  • search, book, and manage flights
  • check in and store mobile boarding passes
  • receive real-time updates and alerts
  • choose seats, purchase extras, and manage upgrades
  • access and track loyalty benefits

It unifies the entire travel experience into one intuitive interface, making journey management easier from the moment a trip is planned until the passenger arrives at their final destination.

Design Challenge

Airline apps often feel heavy, cluttered, and intimidating. Travelers are usually under pressure, moving quickly, or dealing with unexpected changes.

The core challenge:
How do we make complex travel logistics feel effortless, calm, and highly trustworthy?

We needed to deliver simplicity without sacrificing control, and transparency without overwhelming detail.

Our Design Process

Phase 1. Research & Traveler Insights

We began by studying the behavior patterns of both occasional travelers and frequent flyers. We focused on understanding:

  • what makes travelers anxious
  • which steps feel confusing or repetitive
  • how people interact with loyalty systems
  • what information they look for first
  • how quickly they expect the interface to respond

Insights showed that travelers value:

  • clarity
  • speed
  • reassurance
  • instant access to essential information

These insights shaped the foundational UX strategy.

Phase 2. Journey Mapping & Feature Prioritization

We mapped the entire travel journey from discovery to arrival and identified high-pressure moments that needed the most refinement.

Key points included:

  • booking and date selection
  • check-in workflow
  • boarding pass accessibility
  • live flight updates
  • gate changes and timeline adjustments

The result was a prioritized flow where the most critical tasks became the easiest and fastest to complete.

Phase 3. Interaction Design & Information Architecture

We restructured the app so users always understand where they are and what they can do next.

This involved:

  • a simplified navigation structure
  • a dynamic homepage that updates based on upcoming trips
  • fast access to boarding passes and trip details
  • a cleaner visual hierarchy for booking and flight management

The experience was designed to keep users focused, not confused.

Phase 4. Visual Identity & UI Design

The UI had to reflect Etihad’s premium feel while remaining modern and calming.

We focused on:

  • a refined dark-mode aesthetic
  • clean typographic hierarchy for readability
  • brand-aligned colors used sparingly for clarity
  • motion transitions that feel smooth and reduce cognitive load
  • minimal but expressive iconography

The look and feel create trust and set the tone for a stress-free experience.

Phase 5. Prototyping & Usability Testing

We built high-fidelity prototypes to test:

  • search and booking flows
  • check-in and seat selection
  • real-time flight status updates
  • loyalty management views
  • notification behavior

Testing helped us refine the smallest details — gesture interactions, timing of animations, error messaging, and hierarchy adjustments.

Every improvement was guided by real user response.

Phase 6. Performance & Scalability

Because millions of travelers rely on the app, performance was critical.

We optimized for:

  • reduced loading times
  • smoother map and timeline transitions
  • reliable offline access to boarding passes
  • consistent behavior across devices and screen sizes

The design system is modular, scalable, and ready to support future features seamlessly.

The final Etihad Mobile App delivers:
